Description:
Latin American artist

Label Text:
Exhibtion label text from Faint/Hidden/Shrouded: Contemplating Obscurity (March 27-May 10, 2024):
Manuel Álvarez Bravo captures the subject’s anonymity and weaves it into a narrative that transcends visual concealment, exploring the complex relationships between femininity, sexuality, and identity. Bravo deliberately veils the subject’s face behind a bed sheet while allowing the viewer a mostly unobstructed view of her nude body. The concealment of her face sexualizes the image, transforming the viewer into an unwitting voyeur. The classical resonance of her pose emphasizes the nuanced relationship between presence and absence, power and protection.

Bravo challenges us to confront the implications of gazing upon an anonymous subject, raising questions about the control of the act of looking and the boundaries of permissible observation. - Graduate curators: Ruthie Baker, MFA Studio Arts; Simone Cambridge, MA History of Art & Architecture; and Olivia Haynes PhD in the W.E.B. DuBois Department of Afro-American Studies, UMASS
