This print features a "hinaningyō," a kind of doll that is displayed on a platform in celebration of the "Hinamatsuri," or Doll Festival, that is now held annually on March 3. Such dolls were normally part of large ensembles, featuring musicians, emperors, empresses, and other courtly figures, often in the historical costume. The holiday is also known as "Girl's Day."
The title of the print series is written vertically descending at top-left. Beneath that is the artist's signature, which reads "Eizan hitsu," or "drawn by Eizan." The publisher's seal, most likely that of Yoshinoya Katsugorō, below the signature, at lower-middle left. To the right of the doll is the circular 'kiwame' seal of the censor. The writing style within the seal is consistent with a design employed in Edo circa 1811–1815, while Eizan's signature matches a style used by the artist in 1811.
