Label Text: The text translates as “During the firing on peaceful citizens, those condemned to execution were forced to dig their own graves... (Excerpt from a newspaper bulletin)”
Rozanova must have been familiar with Cubist and Futurist collages in which snippets of newspapers render reality, stand for a specific situation, and play with materiality. In addition, in War the newspaper text conveys the character of a lubok. The Futurist artist Rozanova, unlike Goncharova, likely did not deliberately cite this traditional broadsheet format. Yet a contemporary viewer would have made the connection with this popular Russian medium. BJ, 2014
