Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Maggie Hoot, class of 2016:
This drawing is a monument to artistic alterations. The drawing itself is a modello for a larger altarpiece, possibly to be authorized by a patron. Within the work itself, pentimenti (visible changes) are evident especially in the chin of the saint at lower left. A more drastic form of modification is the collage-effect at lower right: the entire quadrant has been replaced and there are additional small patches such as the face of the saint on the right where layering is notable. The two ill-placed marks to the left of the central figure’s head indicate that this work was once owned by the collector William (W.) Appleton, Jr.
