Description:
Silver beaker with a raised cylindrical body with straight sides and a flared rim; cast molded, reeded base band and center punch on the underside. The beaker was made by John Edwards (1671-1746) with the touchmark "IE" crowned in a shield over a fleur-de-lis on the upper side, and engraved in script around the upper side: "The gift of Samuel Bernard to the Church in Deerfeild. 1723." Samuel Barnard (1684-1762), a survivor of the 1704 raid and Deerfield merchant and farmer, donated the beaker to the First Church in 1723. George Sheldon notes that "after the death of his wife [Sarah Williams in 1720] and ch[ild]. he rem. Salem, where he amassed a fortune in trade." In his will, Barnard bequeathed funds for silver to three churches: "I allso give to that Church of Christ in Salem whereof I have been for some years a Member; plate to the Value of sixty pounds: I allso give to that Church in Deerfield whereof the Revd Mr. Jonathan Ashley [1712-1780] is Pastor plate to the Value of One Hundred pounds; I allso give to the Church in Greenfield Plate to the Value of Forty pounds."
