Description:
Silver tankard with a raised stepped and domed lid with a cast flame finial secured by a silver rivet through the top and double scored lines around the folded-edge rim; a straight-sided body with an applied flared rim over double and single scored lines and an applied midband; a cast tumbpiece with a scrolled top edge, and attached to a cast four-segment hinge with pendant drop; a raised and soldered hollow S-curved handle with an oval drop below the upper handle attachment and plain oval cast tailpiece; a circular plate on the body at the lower handle and applied base molding consisting of a cyma curve, cyma-recta curve, and double beads molding. The tankard is marked "J Loring" in slant roman letters within round curves on the top and cyma curves on the bottom for Joseph Loring (1743-1815), and engraved "A Donation/ from Lt Elijah / Arms to the / Church in Deer/ field 1802" in an oval foliated shield on front. There are scratch marks on the bottom: "oz/30 2-/850 and Jan 10/37012/ 30 40." Elijah Arms (1727-1802), the son of William Arms who died at Bloody Brook and Rebecca Nash of Deerfield, married Experience Hawks in 1758, and after her death, Naomi Lyman of Northampton in 1774; Elijah's will specified, "I will & bequeath to the First Church of Christ in Deerfield one silver Tankard the value of fifty Dollars." This tankard is similar to the tankard (HD 97.60.5) made by Loring's contemporary Paul Revere although the Loring tankard does not have the cast grimacing mask piece and has a slightly shallower domed lid than the Revere example.
