In this image of Nihonbashi, the most important bridge in the city, Kiyochika takes full advantage of the effects of light and shadow. Gas lamps line the street, and pedestrians hold different kinds of lanterns. The rickshaws and the horse-drawn bus are equipped with lights as well. As darkness approaches, the sky turns purple in the distance.
