Through reframing familiar images and themes, Villalongo explores and reassesses the idea of Blackness in American and African Art histories. Often, the characters in his work explore a duality, occupying a space between magic and factualness. Villalongo’s collages, which often use velvet and velour, are a process involve a similar exploration of duality - from flatness to dimensionality. The artist has spoken of how velvet is a material close to him, bringing to mind velvet paintings from the 70s and 80s, and also depict a black space that exists as a metaphor for Blackness.
