Through the years, Lesley Dill has utilized the human body and articles of clothing to explore issues of identity, the role of women in society, and the general human condition of our times. Her multi-faceted work encompasses sculpture, prints, tapestries, and performances and involves an inventive integration of diverse, and often delicate, materials. Particularly inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Dill incorporates language into her work, transcribing phrases of poetry onto the bodies of her models or other sculptural forms. This fusion of verbal and visual vocabularies elicits an aura that is both poignant and elusive, and simultaneously raw and refined.
I think of words, especially poetry and especially Emily Dickinson's as a kind of spiritual armor. A protecting skin of words that dresses the soul with inspirations of vulnerability, fear and hope. As clothing cloaks or reveals, so does language, which can selectively present or obscure.
