Description:
This carved argillite panel pipe or panel carving--photos do not show a mouthpiece or bowl for smoking, but these likely exist on the object--shows a European male figurehead crouched over the bow of the ship, stylized flowing tobacco leaves behind him, a small shingle (pitched) roof house, and two small crewmembers "lounging" or sleeping on the floor of the ship. This depiction offers a somewhat comical Haida interpretation of European society. Although the images are carved in a European fashion, the ways in which they fit together is reminiscent of a totem pole. AP2018
