reproduction; nagasaki-e; nishiki-e

Label Text:
This print is unsigned but bears the mark of the publisher Masunaga, who was active in Nagasaki's Motoshitachō, but about whom little else is known (see: Marks, Andreas "Publishers of Japanese Woodblock Prints," Hotei (2011): U211, 411–412). Such pictures of foreigners were immensely popular, especially in the port towns of Nagasaki and Yokohama. This print is pasted onto a detached book page, the verso of which reads "No. 5," indicating that this print was possibly made for export or is a later reproduction. - BB, 2014
