Label Text:
A native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Charles Demuth attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, before studying art in Europe. Keenly aware of the latest contemporary European trends, Demuth belonged to the circle of abstract or "modernist" artists working in America in the years surrounding World War I. The leader of the group was the pioneering photographer and extraordinary visionary, Alfred Stieglitz. Through the years, Demuth, along with his colleagues Marsden Hartley, Arthur Dove, John Marin, and Georgia O'Keeffe, exhibited his work at Stieglitz's "291" and the American Place Gallery.

Demuth produced a body of loosely rendered watercolors that illustrate his delicate sense of color and his meticulous technique; he shared these traits with his fellow artists, including John Marin.
