Description:
Half-length portrait of Antwerp painter Adam van Noort. This etching comes from the series entitled Icones Principum Virorum Doctorum, Pictorum Chalcographorum Statuorum nec non Amatorum Pictoriae Artis Numero Centum, generally known as The Iconography, (c.1632-44). The unique first state (London, Chamber’s Hall collection) was entirely etched by Van Dyck but in the second state the architectural background was finished by another hand. Van Dyck’s black chalk drawing for the etching is in the Rijksmuseum, Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (RP-T-1884-A-299; Vey 244).

Adam van Noort was a history painter who worked in Antwerp and was one of the teachers of Rubens. Van Dyck, in turn, worked in the latter’s studio for a while. The portraits which Van Dyck etched himself were mostly of artists from an earlier generation.
