1603. In the Chudov Monastery, the monk Pimen is writing the last chapter of his history of Russia. The novice Grigori awakens from a nightmare and expresses regret that he hasn’t tasted glory in war and society.
Chudov Monastery, also known as Alexius’s Archangel Michael Monastery, was located inside the Moscow Kremlin. It was one of the biggest centers of Muscovite book culture. The Soviet government closed it in 1918, and dismantled it in 1929.
While the monk Pimen is writing a chronicle of Russian history, his novice Grigorii, depicted on the left side, awakes from a horrible dream. Pimen tells him the story of the murder of the tsarevich Dmitrii, and Grigorii declares that he will pretend to be the tsarevich and claim the Russian throne.
