Label Text:
Neshat, one of the leading women artists of our time, moved to the United States from Iran in 1974. In 1990, she returned to Iran, and found it thoroughly transformed by the Islamic revolution. Although her work is not autobiographical, Neshat's experience inspired her to create photographs and videos that engage issues of exile, repression, and the identity of women.

Soliloquy, Neshat's first color video installation, treats the theme of exilic identity as a direct confrontation between East and West, represented by ancient and modern architectural forms projected on opposite walls. With graphic force and simplicity, this still of the traditionally-clothed protagonist and a modernist building summarizes this conflicting dialogue between East and West.
