Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Classical Period, ca. 447-432 BCE. This cast is of figure O from the east pediment of the Parthenon, located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The group of sculptures on the east pediment composed a scene depicting the patron goddess of Athens, Athena, being born from the head of her father and the king of the gods, Zeus. This horse head belongs to one of the horses drawing the chariot of Selene, the moon goddess. Its mouth is open, its eyes are wide, and its ears, now missing, were once flat against its head. Drill holes on the horse’s head and along its main would have allowed for a metal bridle and other ornaments to be attached. The original marble sculpture after which this cast is made is located at the British Museum in London, England.
Provenience: Greece, Athens, Acropolis, Parthenon (original)
