Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Classical Period, ca. 447-432 BCE. According to the organizational system implemented by W.B. Dinsmoor and A. Michaelis, this is a cast of block VI from the east frieze of the Parthenon, located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The frieze depicts the Panathenaic procession held in honor of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. On this block, three figures are depicted sitting in a row. They are identified as, from left, Poseidon, Apollo, and Artemis. Poseidon, looking straight ahead, taps Apollo on the shoulder; Apollo turns to him in acknowledgment. Artemis adjusts her dress with her right hand and reaches for Aphrodite’s, on the next block to the her right, arm. The original marble relief after which this cast is made is located at the Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece.
