Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a bronze original dating to the Classical Period, ca. 470 BCE. This life-size sculpture depicts a standing young man clothed in a belted, ankle-length tunic and a headband. Both arms are missing, cut off above the elbow, as are the horses and chariot which would have completed the original work. Dedicated to Apollo by Polyzalos, tyrant of Gela, a Greek colony in modern Sicily, for the god’s hand in helping the tyrant win the chariot race in the Pythian Games of 470 BCE, the bronze original is one of few surviving works retaining its inlaid glass eyes. The original is located at the Delphi Archaeological Museum in Delphi, Greece.
