Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Archaic Period, ca. 550 BCE. This partial statue of a female figure, missing its arms and with both legs cut off at the ankle, depicts Nike, the Greek deification of Victory. Facing the viewer and with a bent right knee implying motion to the right, the original sculpture is thought to be a type which would have had both arms and wings. A base found after the excavation of this armless Nike names the sculptor as Achermos; this Achermos was probably the inventor of this type of running, winged Nike.
