Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Archaic Period, ca. 550 BCE. A kouros is an Archaic Greek stylized sculpture of a young man. Kouroi stand with their left leg bent forward and their arms by their sides; kouroi sculpted in the later Archaic Period are more naturalistic than their early counterparts and demonstrate their artist’s understanding of the human form. This kouros dates to the middle of the Archaic Period; the level of detail in the figure’s musculature is correspondingly middling.
Provenience: Greece, the Cyclades, Melos (original)
