Label Text: This triptych is signed at lower-left of the left panel with the artist's signature and red seal, both of which read "Ōju Toshihide," a name occasionally employed by the painter. To the left of the signature and red seal is the seal of the publisher, Akiyama Buemon, which identifies the publication date of this print as February, 1904 (Meiji 37). Besides the artist's dramatic use of black ink, the print also features embossing in the explosions of water.
There are other versions of this print with some variation of the narrative in the colophon at upper-right of the right panel. For example, the version at the British Museum (1946,0209,0.100.1-3) does not have an English inscription and even the Japanese varies subtly. The event depicted here by Toshihide was the opening to the Russo-Japanese War and, especially with the Japanese emerging decisively victorious, was a popular subject for print designers and publishers.
