Description:
Painted wooden sign marked "Deerfield Handicrafts Shop" made by Luanna A. (Franklin) Thorn (1874-1965) for her shop in the rear of the Wells-Thorn House. Luanna Thorn and her husband, Dr. Edwin Cyrus Thorn Jr. (1874-1920), one of two doctors in Deerfield, lived on lot 26, which Luanna bought in 1905 and is now known as the Wells-Thorn House. Both Edwin and Luanna Thorn were very involved with the Deerfield Arts and Crafts Revival movement, which was first formalized as the 'Deerfield Society of Arts and Crafts' in 1899 and then changed to 'Deerfield Industries in 1907. Her 18th-century home contained several looms upon which she wove hand-dyed wool and linen threads into bedspreads, table runners, wall hangings, and curtains. There, tourists purchased baskets woven by the Thorn and Franklin families, antiques, and Luanna's textiles.
