This delicate ivory plaque once formed the left panel of a diptych (two hinged panels) used in private prayer. The scenes of the life of Christ were “read” for spiritual education, beginning at the lower left with the Annunciation (Angel Gabriel’s message to the Virgin Mary that she will bear a child). To the right is the Nativity (the birth of Jesus); above are the Crucifixion (Christ on the cross) and the holy women arriving at the empty tomb of Christ.
The style of the carving is Gothic, with graceful, swaying figures and elaborate arches that resemble those of the great cathedrals of northern Europe.
