Label Text: Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Amanda Manocherian, class of 2015:
Poccetti, a Florentine painter and draftsman, was famous for his clear compositions, naturalistic and supremely articulate figures, and dramatically portrayed narratives. Most of his drawings were preparatory studies for larger works in fresco or oil. In his individual figure studies, like this image of the Archangel Gabriel, he often used red, black, and white chalks in combination with stumping to create ethereally modeled three-dimensional forms with tone and shadow. Unfortunately there is no remaining record of the work to which this drawing relates.
A collector probably wrote the correct attribution on the bottom of the image long after the drawing was created.
