Though the title does not explicitly say so, the crudely framed image of Christ’s face and the crown of thorns iconographically represent the Veil of Veronica. On his way to Calvary where he would be crucified, Jesus stopped to allow Saint Veronica to wipe the blood and sweat from his face, thereby leaving his image on her cloth. This tangible manifestation of Christ’s sacrifice for the redemption of mankind is a powerful conclusion to the “Guerre” group and the "Miserere" album. In Rouault’s final plate, faith persists.
