Gatson is known for his vibrantly radiating works, which honor African-American personalities from the Civil Rights era. The collaged image here is borrowed from the iconic photographs documenting the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. Elizabeth Eckford was one of nine African-American students who enrolled in the all-white school after the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, which ruled that segregation of public schools is unconstitutional. Eckford and her peers became a symbol of courage in the face of racism when they defied hostile crowds and Arkansas National Guard troops sent to prevent the students from entering the school.
