Description:
French iron trepan brace with a rotating handle, which partially retained its original nickel plating and is stamped "A AUBRY" and H.M. S1." A. Aubry was a famous French medical and surgical instrument maker who worked from Boulevard Saint Michel 6, in Paris. In 1900 he published a catalog summarizing his work, "Catalogue Illustre des Instruments de Chirurgie." From the 16th century onward, the distal end of the cranial brace trepan was adapted to operate a perforator followed by a crown cylindrical saw. By the 18th century, crown saws had removable centering pins that acted as perforators, which were removed once the saw has estblished a track, By the 20th century, cylindrical sawa were repalced by special drills and burrs. Looking like a carpenter's brace and bit, the revolving butt and crank handle is used to drill into a skull. The distall end holds a 5 mm drill with circular hooked end, and has a release lever for changing bits; the drill is quite slender and appears bent.
