Description:
One of two silver flagons (see HD L87.01) made by Henry Farnam (1773-1833), which is engraved, “PRESENTED / TO THE / CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH / by / Nathaniel Smith / March 1st 1811 / Sunderland.” Nathaniel Smith (1759-1833) was a prosperous and successful merchant, magistrate, the first president of the Sunderland Bank, and was instrumental in the founding of Amherst College. Among his gifts was a donation of $3000 for a permanent fund to benefit the Sunderland Congregational Parish. He also donated a baptismal bowl and the greater part of the communion service.
