Description:
Small box painted Spanish brown with a chip-carved facade ornamented with interlocking rosettes below a lid with incised moldings at the front and back which is strengthened by cleats at each end and attached with cotter pin pintle hinges. The box is significant for its condition and its provenance in the Eastman family of Amherst, MA. The box descended to Mrs. Mabel Fulton, who lived in the Dexter House on South Pleasant Street in Amhurst, and was acquired by Reginald and Rachel French of Amherst. Although smaller, the carving style of the box is reminiscent of box HD 56.303 in the museum's collection.
