Description:
Pair of brass andirons stamped "J Davis". James S. Davis is known to have operated a brass foundry in Boston about 1803; Reginald French, an antique dealer in Amherst, owned a document that linked Davis' training to the foundry of Paul Revere. The andirons are topped with a finial with a rounded base and an octagonal top surmounted by a rounded top, which matches the upper section of the two turned log stop; over a two-part column of a ringed base below a hexagonal bulb below a ringed turning below two reels; over a pair of ogee legs and pad feet with a spur at the knee, which are peened to the lower end of iron support rod. Mounted behind the shaft is a piece of sheet brass above the original wrought iron billet bar with a ring at the rear.
