Description:
Six-passenger Concord Coach. Enclosed body, fixed pillars, open sides with roll up curtains, doors for interior access, folding steps, hung on thorough-braces, triple reach. Trimming: interior fabric brown cotton velveteen with block print repeat of flowers. Blue green fringe around damasse (a kind of damask) head lining, red velveteen on jump seats. Body “straw” (light yellow) with green and brown-red and dark yellow shaded scrollwork on lower body panels. Shield with stars and stripes on lower door panel. Landscapes outlined in peaked “frame” and scrollwork on PL & PR door panels (details obscured by darkened varnish). Double-block shaded letters on banderole (former lettering and degradation of surface makes it difficult to read). Undercarriage brown-red with stout black striping and fine line yellow striping throughout. Older striping on undercarriage visible. Folding wrought iron steps. PL and PR door handles are not identical. “US Mail--Express” painted on seat riser. Luggage rail around top (metal bent). Luggage rack at rear, leather straps broken. Suspended on thorough-braces with triple reach connecting axles. Concord coach or stagecoach with a brass plaque, "ABBOT, DOWNING CO./ CONCORD, N.H. U.S.A." and "Chapin & Damon" painted over an earlier name on the outside, "U.S. MAIL", "EXPRESS", and serial number "106" stamped under the seat. Ornamental painting probably done by John Burgum. The coach was given to Historic Deerfield in 1973 by the Amherst Historical Society and has a history of being used in the Amherst area. This coach is believed to have run between here and Springfield. Condition: Overall: surface dirt, wear, paint is scratched, abraded and tenting with scattered loss, darkened varnish, textiles embedded with fine particulates, sections torn with loss, fringe detached, side facing barn wall exposed to water and damp, thorough-braces broken so body is leaning to one side causing stress to structure (coach has been winched up in July 2017 to prevent further damage).
