Description:
Female figure

Label Text:
Matriarchy is one of the most figural of French's later works, featuring a clearly formed, albeit disproportionate, woman, and a monstrous, but human, face behind her.

With letters from French's mother sister in mind, held in the Amherst College Archives and Special Collections at Frost Library, it is particularly tempting to speculate on what the artist intended to say about "matriarchy" in this drawing.
