Label Text:
A distinct form of divination among the Luba peoples in central Africa is Bilumbu, which entails states of trance. A Bilumbu diviner will often possess sculptures of female figures holding bowls, like this one, which sit next to him and represent his wives. This example shows a strong, squatting female nude that holds in outstretched arms a vessel, which would have been filled with powder with which the diviner marks his face for and during the rite. Her hair cascades from her head, while her body reveals scarification, and a representation of an antelope horn charged with medicinal substances projects from the top of her head.
