This life-sized head is attributed as a portrait of Marcia Otacilia Severa, wife of Emperor Philip the Arab, who reigned over the Roman Empire from 244 to 249. The original nose and chin were broken off; the losses were filled with plaster in the 1940s on the basis of the empress' portraits on ancient coins and a marble bust from the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (23.206).
