Label Text:
Moore acknowledged the influence of the telescope and microscope on his curved, biomorphic forms. In the 1937 book Circle: International Survey of Constructive Art, he contributed the quotation, “I DISLIKE the idea that contemporary art is an escape from life. Because a work does not aim at reproducing the natural appearance it is not therefore an escape from life—it may be a penetrating into reality.” Moore’s writing appeared next to the essay “Art and the Scientist” by the famous x-ray crystallographer J. D. Bernal, which discussed the creative influence of modern scientific imagery on the arts.
