Description:
Oil painting inscribed on the back of the canvas "The Surrender of Earl Cornwallis to General Washington & Count De Rochambeau 1781". The painting is copied from a small English engraving of the 1780's, which does not include Washington, but rather his representative, General Benjamin Lincoln together with Lord Cornwallis and the Counte de Rochambeau. Historic Deerfield also owns a print, "Surrender of Cornwallis (Lieutenant General) of the British Army in North America to General Washington and Count de Rochambeau on the 19th of Oct. 1781 - whereby the Posts of York-town and Gloucester in Virginia, were then given up to the combined forces of America and France" (HD 77.015), which may have been the source for this painting.
