A prolific American-Impressionist painter, Childe Hassam moved to Paris in the fall of 1886, where he studied with Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre at the Acadèmie Julian. He quickly found the academic environment stifling, and chose instead to study art on his own. During his three-year sojourn in Paris, he familiarized himself with the soft tones and expressive, choppy brushstrokes of the French Impressionists. Bois de Boulogne is an early example of Hassam’s newly formed Impressionist style. The painting captures the bustle of a street in the Bois de Boulogne, the second-largest park in Paris, created in 1858 by the Emperor Louis Napoleon.
