Description: Bridal chest with frame and panel construction. The front and back of the chest have 3 panels each, and the sides have a single panel each. Shallow carvings of mythical creatures resembling bats and dragons cover the front, back, sides, legs, and top of the lid. The hand-hammered copper escutcheon resembles a creature's head showing its tongue. The chest bears several marks and inscriptions: “K H A” for Katharine Hall Andrews is carved into front central panel; “Katharine H Andrews/Chicago” is carved on the inside bottom of the case; and “DESIGNED AND DECORATED/ BY/ ISADORE P TAYLOR” is burned into the underside of the of the case bottom. The lid interior also features the following inscription: “As the years go by may it always/ be with a good hand and heart that she/ lifts and closes the lid/1899."
