Label Text: Label text from the exhibition (OFF)BALANCE: Art in the Age of Human Impact, March 27-May 9, 2025: Yin Yang embodies the balance and tension inherent in the Anthropocene, where human intervention both creates and disrupts ecological systems. Rooted in the Yin-Yang philosophy, Purnomo’s layering of calligraphy and numbers forms a visual dialogue between harmony and conflict, emphasizing the cyclical nature of environmental change. Just as Yin and Yang are inseparable, human actions leave marks—both constructive and detrimental—on the planet, shaping a world where intervention is both necessary and disruptive.
Purnomo’s work asks viewers to consider how balance can be redefined and sustained amid ongoing environmental transformation, reinforcing this exhibition’s exploration of human responsibility in shaping our collective future. - Bo Kim, MFA Candidate in Studio Arts
