2006 Curatorial Fellowship Exhibition: Word and Image
Bilgé Friedlaender’s artist book, Words, Numbers, Lines (1977), comments on the image as representation by replacing image with object and pairing it with its name. Affixed vertically to one page is a piece of red wire. Labeled “WIRE” beneath, it acts as a reminder of the difference between image and object. Another page features a printed, horizontal line, labeled “LINE” below. Here, the word is in quadruplicate, creating four additional horizontal and vertical lines, which collectively form a grid. Intricate layers of meaning permeate the pages. The wire’s relatively straight composition is, essentially, a line. The line, similarly, could easily be understood as representing an object, such as a wire. Friedlaender’s book thus at once defines and melds object, representation, and word.
