Label Text: Do we create spaces for ourselves or carve out space within predominantly White institutions? In taylor barnes's "i'm outta there", the figure rejects the confines of an environment that does not welcome her in a rush of understanding her own power. She has motion as she progresses through the frame, leaving a blank piece of stiched cloth behind her. As she exits, the action feels immediate and present. There is no fear or shame in her choice. It is a deliberate stance. A single eye stares intently, ready to return the gaze of the viewer, as if to dare them to stop her. (2021)
