Description: An extremely rare city plan or map of Holyoke, Massachusetts, published and lithographed by Henry Thomas of Holyoke, the owner of the Holyoke Street Railway Company. Printed in upper left hand corner, "MAP/ OF THE CITY OF/ HOLYOKE/ PUBLISHED BY/ LOOMIS & KIRTLAND/ Book & Job Printers & Publishers of the/ HOLYOKE TRANSCRIPT/ High Ste. Holyoke, Mass./ Scale 40 rods to one Inch./ Lith of Henry Thomas Holyoke, Mass." The map shows this historic mill town on the Connecticut River; The town is divided into wards, each of which is shaded a different color to allow for easy differentiation. Buildings are illustrated throughout the city, many of which are labeled, including the grammar school, high school, city hall, as well as numerous businesses and churches. Three canals cut through the city and the Connecticut River Railroad traverses a few city wards before reaching the bank of the Connecticut River. Condition: Laid down on archival tissue. Closed tear extending from left side into printed area professionally repaired. Two infill repairs to left border. This is the only known surviving example of this map.
