Description:
Thrown and lathe trimmed, u-shaped creamware punch bowl decorated with several overglaze black transfer prints. The interior well of the bowl features a print of a 3-masted ship at sea under full sail, on the front of the exterior decorated with a printed poetical verse and scene, which are separated by floral sprays. The verse, set within a rococo style cartouche, reads, "When this you see / remember me, / And bear me in your mind, / Let all the World / say what they will, / speak of me as you find." The opposite side decorated with a print of "The Sailor's Farewell" set within a rococo style cartouche, depicting a man and woman with clasped hands standing on the edge of a body of water with a ship in the background. One of the bowl's floral sprays is similiar to ones found on pieces made by the Herculaneum pottery, suggesting that the bowl was made and decorated in Liverpool. Condition: Some scratching on the interior and some chips on the footrim, several original and glazed over, some with resulting discoloration. A partially torn label on the underside of the bowl reads, "LIVERPOOL / CREAMWARE / c. 1785."
