Description: Blue and white transfer printed plate by Enoch Wood & Sons with a view of Taymouth Castle in Perthshire, Scotland, surrounded by a border of intertwined leaves, grapes, and flowers. The view is taken from an engraving by W.R. Smith, after a drawing by J.P. Nelson, which appears in volume 6 of John Preston Neale's Views of the Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland (London: Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1823). The plate is part of a larger series, Wood's "Grapevine Border Series," which includes views of a number of English, Scottish, and Irish estates. Printed in blue on the reverse is the plate's pattern name: "Taymouth Castle / Perthshire." The reverse also features the impressed mark of Hartford, Connecticut importer, Peter Morton, which reads: "PETER MORTON / Importer / of / Earthenware / CONNECTICUT." China merchant Peter Morton of 68 Front St., Hartford, CT, had a business relationship with Enoch Wood -- and possibly was an American agent for the Staffordshire firm. Many of his advertisements relate that his products are "received direct from the manufactory."
