Man's cabana or beach jacket, white plain-weave cotton with brown and yellow printed design of all-over roundels featuring abstracted swordfish, sailboat, and tropical island motifs. White pile-weave (terry cloth) lining. The construction features a turned-down collar and long sleeves with turned-up cuffs. Secured CF with three (top one now missing) mother-of-pearl buttons. Label inside at back neckline: “SAK’S FIFTH AVE./ B.” 1950-1960. Worn by Henry N. Flynt (1893-1970). After the Second World War, American men and their families pursued weekend leisure activities in earnest, including trips to the beach. This jacket was typical of the kinds of clothing worn by men at the beach during the 1950s. The simple but playful printed pattern reflects the carefree attitude these vacations suggested.
