Description: Phelp's 70-page Traveler's Guide cosists of a list of stage, steamboat, and railroad routes for eatern and midwestern states, and California. Tables of distances on the Ohio, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois, Wabash, Arkansas, and Red Rivers. Following the text is a two-page list of maps, portraits, and guide books sold by Ensign, Thayer & Co. who held the copyright to the Traveler's Guide.
The map folded in the rear is titled Phelp's National Map of the United States, a Travellers Guide. It depicts the United States from Maine to the eastern border of Texas and Indian Territory, marking roads, railroads, canals, rivers, and towns. Around the margin of the map are emblems of each state, portraits of the presidents from Washington to Franklin Pierce, and portraits of notables such as Benjamin Franklin. Includes inset maps of southern Florida and Map of Oregon, California & Texas. Map drawn and engraved by J.M. Atwood; published by Thayer, Bridgman & Fanning, New York.
