Description:
English pearlware teaset with a multi-colored peacock and sponged green leaf decoration in "Prattware" colors of green, blue, yellow, orange, and brown, after the potter, William Pratt, who developed the palette at his factory in Lane Delph, Staffordshire. These are the typical range of colors available for underglaze painted decoration, a palette limited to colors derived from metallic oxides that could withstand the heat of the glaze firing. The center peacock, which only appears on one side, is surrounded by sponged green foliage on scrolling brown stems. The set includes a teapot and cover, sugar bowl and cover, cream pot with loop handle, and five teacups and six saucers (count 14 as of 1/18/94). The teapot and sugar bowl lids have acorn knobs with a brown foliate design, sponged green leaves on brown stems, and concentric brown circles around the rims; and the cups have the peacock design on the outside and a sponged green leaf in the well with brown circles around the inner rim.
