Description:
One of a pair of enamel on brass mirror knobs decorated with a warship in full sail and the words "ADMIRAL NELSON/ VANGUARD/ 74 guns Augst. 1st 1798". The ship was Vice Admiral Nelson's flagship in the Battle of the Nile, in which the British navy defeated Napoleon's navy. This type of work is known as "Battersea" enamel, 18th century English enamel work done in imitation of European porcelain. It is of gilded brass with a coloured enamel inset and a beaded border. There is a carriage screw for attachment at the small end.
