Description:
Printed cotton handkerchief block-printed with three songs; "Sabbath School Hymn," "We Never Part from Thee," and "The Golden Rule." All three were sung to the same rhythm, and parts were divided up according the boys and girls. The handkerchief represents the novelty available in fashion through technology by the early 19th-century. This single-color, inexpensively-produced accessory provided entertainment and was affordable to a wide range of people. Multiple handkerchiefs were printed on lengths of cotton, and the outer printed borders served as a guide for cutting out each one. The printing was done using engraved copper plates, which allowed for more detailed, finer designs that wooden block prints. The cotton fabric is a fairly fine, balanced plain weave of 82epi x 82tpi. All four sides are hemmed 1/4." The Boston Chemical Company was incorporated on January 31, 1834.
