Description:
Creamware baskets are often found as part of a dessert pyramid and were used to hold dry sweetmeats such as sugared nuts and comfits. This exampe of a miniature basket with fish falls more into the category of whimsical miniature creamware and pearlware platters and plates depicting dishes of food and probably used as children's toys. These miniature dishes with food were available in sets. (A partial small-size creamware table setting is owned by Colonial Williamsburg, 1977-245), Molded oval, woven basket with sides and twisted handle, within the basket a large fish lies on its side, the basket and fish are decorated with metallic oxide colors in gray and green.The oval basket molded with wickerwork washed in a pale green glaze, affixed with a rope-twist overhead handle, and applied on the interior with a brownish-grey-spotted fish.
